The Break You Deserve, the Answers You Need

Sometimes our busiest times are also our best times for breaking out of routines. This is apparent to me now, as I (like all of you) merge into the jam-packed agenda of the new school year. Two weeks ago, while speaking

To that end, today we kick off a brand new one-day program from NBOA: Business Office NOW, landing first at the Holton-Arms School in Bethesda, Md. The purpose is to bring the "best of" NBOA's expertise, resources and community to schools' business office staff around the country for a one-day immersion in the most important issues impacting the business of independent education. By attending, you'll get answers to the following questions:

  • What will our school's financials look like in 10 years?
  • How can our school develop a more sustainable financial future?
  • How do our IT investments compare to other schools with comparable budgets and enrollments?
  • How can we recoup more of our costs incurred in renting out our facilities?
  • With regard to staffing and HR, what legal issues should we be aware of?
  • What is the future of online learning for independent schools?

After today's inaugural Business Office NOW program, we'll head to Chicago and the ISACS Central Office on October 23 (sold out), Oakland and the Head-Royce School on October 27, and then to Seattle and the Lakeside School on November 6. Given robust demand for this new program, we plan to announce spring 2015 dates and locations soon.

I hope you can make it to Business Office NOW. If not, perhaps we can connect later this month at the North Carolina Association of Independent Schools Annual Educators Conference. Or, in early November in Miami, at the SSS Financial Aid Conference. Or, later in November at the Florida Council of Independent Schools Convention. Or, in early January at the New Jersey Association of Independent Schools' Trustee Enrichment Day.

The list goes on, but the key is that with each program we learn how NBOA can do an even better job serving the national community of business officers.

I look forward to seeing you soon.
