The Will J. Hancock Unsung Hero Award is given to business officers who have made extraordinary contributions to their schools and exemplify exceptional integrity, knowledge and motivation. At the end of each school year, new Unsung Heroes receive their award from their head of school, often at a significant school occasion such as a board meeting or an all-school ceremony. What makes these Unsung Heroes so special? The highlights below come straight from their colleagues' nominations.

Title: Assistant Head for School Operations and Chief Financial Officer
School: The Walker School

Superpower: Turnaround trailblazer: Following the post-2008 recession decline, Christie Holman collaborated closely with senior administration and the Board of Trustees to prioritize the school’s strong academic program despite limited resources. Her creativity, vision and work ethic were pivotal in helping Walker overcome challenges and begin to grow. Now, with increasing enrollment and a newly unveiled, five-year strategic plan, Holman continues to be a driving force behind The Walker School’s success.

“As has been the case over the past fifteen years, Christie is a driving force helping Walker to be the best version of itself,” said Head of School Carl Carlson.

Transition pro: Holman played a crucial role in the onboarding process of the new head of school. “She worked with me to get up-to-speed on the fine points of the budgeting cycle and board work for the finance committee. However, that was just the tip of the iceberg,” as Holman helped explain the culture of Walker in a deep and meaningful way.

“Yes” Woman: “While saying no is a reality of business officers, [Holman] always tries to start with a yes and an effort to make things work. When resource allocations require her to say no, she does an amazing job of explaining the why behind the decision,” said Carlson.

Calm in crisis: During the COVID-19 pandemic, Holman played a central role in creating policy and designing a safe environment for students, while also effectively safeguarding the long term financial health of the school. “Walker did an amazing job of meeting the needs of its families, in large part due to [Holman’s] work.”

All-in, all the time: Whether it’s an athletic contest, a school play, or an art show, Holman is almost always present, often bringing her family along to campus for special events. Her involvement even extends to social relationships outside of school with parents and colleagues.
