The Will J. Hancock Unsung Hero Award is given to business officers who have made extraordinary contributions to their schools and exemplify exceptional integrity, knowledge and motivation. At the end of each school year, new Unsung Heroes receive their award from their head of school, often at a significant school occasion such as a board meeting or an all-school ceremony. What makes these Unsung Heroes so special? The highlights below come straight from their colleagues' nominations.

School: Thomas Jefferson School, St. Louis, Missouri
Years in position: 7
Years in an independent school business office: 7
Superpower: Trailblazer. As the first business officer at Thomas Jefferson School, Bording played a key role in the improvement and management of financial operations for the organization at large. From the outset, Dale has “brought the personal qualities of intelligence, flexibility and courage [when asked] to learn a whole new culture and build something completely new from within.”
Fast and Flexible: “He seems to be able to solve just about any problem that may land his way. On any given day, in addition to doing his normal business management tasks, he may be called upon to troubleshoot a server problem, supervise a fire drill, check in boarding students at breakfast or clear a gutter. Whatever is needed, Dale is at the ready.”
Ultimate employee resource: Since joining Thomas Jefferson School in 2012, Bording has applied his corporate knowledge of employee incentive programs to the school and modernized its payroll, benefits program and personnel policies. His expertise and forthright attitude have been especially helpful in addressing “the rather byzantine world” of health care and other employee benefits.
