The Will J. Hancock Unsung Hero Award is given to business officers who have made extraordinary contributions to their schools and exemplify exceptional integrity, knowledge and motivation. At the end of each school year, new Unsung Heroes receive their award from their head of school, often at a significant school occasion such as a board meeting or an all-school ceremony. What makes these Unsung Heroes so special? The highlights below come straight from their colleagues' nominations.

Title: Director of Finance and Operations
School: Graland Country Day School, Denver, Colorado
Years in current position: 9
Years in an independent school business office: 9
Superpower: Calm head, steady hand. He has led Graland through two major building projects, a head of school transition and a faculty compensation redesign. "Through it all (and the many unpredictable crises or near crises that a school endures), he has been a steadying force, undaunted in the face of any challenge."
Mentor: "When a school goes through a leadership transition, it is naturally at risk. Juan did not look at [Graland's leadership change] as a threat. Instead, he partnered with me, gave me honest feedback when needed, supported me and looked first to the success of the school, not his own personal success. He is truly one of the most diligent and compassionate people I know."
Strategic Thinker: "Juan is always the first phone call I make when I am faced with an issue that needs a thoughtful and prudent approach. I trust him to listen carefully and then respond with insightful."
Compassionate Colleague: "Juan is knowledgeable about HR issues and is able to show his support and care even if there is a necessary separation between employee and employer."
