(From Campus Safety) In 2023, approximately one in three students (31.5%) said that they have experienced racism in school, according to a new survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) .Of the 20,000 students surveyed, Asian students and students of color, particularly females and LGBTQ+ students, were disproportionately affected. The survey also found that experiences of racism were associated with poor mental health, increased suicide risk and higher substance use. To address these issues, the CDC recommends professional development for staff, tackling systemic inequities and fostering culturally responsive school environments to help mitigate racism.
