The balance sheets of 112 nonprofit private colleges and 65 for-profit private colleges failed a test of the U.S. Education Department for financial responsibility for the academic year 2014-2015. The test is based on an institution's debt and assets, among other factors, but some higher-education groups have criticized the methodology used to devise the scores. The total number of 177 failing grades compares to 159 the previous year; several of the colleges have closed since the 2014-2015 year. The Chronicle has a searchable database of financial responsibility scores for hundreds of degree-granting institutions.
