(From Forbes) Chief financial officers are in a better position than ever to transition to the top executive position at their organizations, according to Tim Steinkopf, CEO of Centrify and Forbes council member. For CFOs who seek to take their careers to the next level, Steinkopf has the following advice:
- Learn the competencies necessary to be CEO. Taking the time to learn how all sectors of the business run and how peers contribute to the business’s success will pay in dividends.
- Know how to allocate resources. Understanding how and when to be creative with money is critical to executing your vision.
- Practice self-awareness when it comes to projecting the appropriate persona. Be aware of your own strengths and weaknesses to refine your leadership style.
- Develop relationships across the organization. Strong functional relationships are key to efficiency and effectiveness in day to day operations.
- Master quick, direct and transparent communication to respond to employees’ concerns and help establish expectations.
