(from The Nonprofit Times) From weak board governance to "weakness in strategic management," four in five nonprofit organizations struggle with leadership and management issues, and just 11 percent have what it takes to achieve "optimal impact," according to William F. Meehan III and Kim Starkey Jonker. In Engine of Impact: Essentials of Strategic Leadership in the Nonprofit Sector, the two identified seven essential components of strategic leadership needed to maximize impact, and said organizations must master them all to achieve their goals: mission, strategy, impact evaluation, insight and courage, organization and talent, funding and board governance. With the largest intergenerational transfer of wealth in U.S. history underway, Meehan and Jonker said that nonprofits "working intentionally and proactively to master the essentials of strategic leadership [can] seize this tremendous opportunity and ‘earn the right’ to receive additional funding and maximize their impact.”
