7 Hiring Blind Spots to Avoid

Dec 13, 2017, 3:52 PM

(from IRMI) Hiring decisions based on subjective opinions can set schools back reputationally, financially and otherwise. Here are seven common blind spots and a few steps that may help you avoid them.

  • The candidate is personable. Likeability during the interview process doesn't necessarily mean an individual will fit into their role in the organization. Ask questions that reveal behavior in previous workplace settings. Use a job applicant appraisal form to objectively measure whether competencies match the role.
  • The candidate is a good leader and developer. Prior to interviewing, determine the core competencies that match up with a successful leader in your organization. Ask questions that examine their past behavior to indicate how they might lead at your school.
  • The candidate has sales acumen.
  • The interviewer assumes the candidate is not skilled for the role.
  • The candidate has good organizational skills.
  • The hiring manager relies on word of mouth.
  • The candidate does not have experience.
