A For-Profit High School's Risky Guarantee

(from Inside Higher Ed) Guaranteed admission to a top college: That's the "Fairmont College Promise" from Fairmont Private Schools/Fairmont Preparatory Academy in Orange County. A press release last week said the school's "graduates will be accepted to and receive scholarships for tuition at the Top 100 U.S. colleges or universities. The school also says it will convert up to 100 percent of tuition paid to attend its high school into a scholarship to the college of choice if the promise is not met."

The guarantee is provided on a sliding scale based on students' grades and the length of their enrollment at Fairmont; students who enroll in seventh grade get the strongest guarantee. The "top 100" schools are those so designated in various rankings by U.S. News & World Report.

Education insiders question the move on a number of grounds, contending among other things that college counselors should focus on finding the best college fit for individual graduates, not on steering them to particular schools.
