A Slowdown for Home Schooling

Sep 28, 2017, 6:10 PM

(from the Washington Post) Following a rapid rise in recent years, growth in home schooling among U.S. families appears to have tapered off, according to new data released by the Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). In the 2015-16 academic year, 3.3 percent of students ages 5 to 17 were home-schooled, down from 3.4 percent in 2012. Home schooling is most prevalent in rural areas and towns (about 4 percent), compared to 3 percent in cities and suburban areas.

Charter school enrollment continues to grow, rising from just under a million students in fall 2004 to 2.7 million by fall 2014. The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools puts the figure even higher, at 2.9 million students.

As for private schools, about 10 percent of U.S. students attend these, NCES reported.
