Sharing or Protecting Multicultural Space?

(From Inside Higher Ed and The Hill) The University of Virginia's newly opened Multicultural Student Center is raising questions about how schools go about creating spaces that support diverse communities on campus. In a now-viral video, a student stands up in the Multicultural Center calls for white students in the space to be, "really cognizant of the space that you’re taking up." The university clarified via Twitter that the newly relocated and expanded Multicultural Student Center is open to everyone at the university. The administration has tried to support the student in the video, who has since faced threats and racist comments, and called for the community to “allow for the expression of all ideas, including those that make some uncomfortable and those that offend.”
