AAP Releases Interim Guidance on Reopening

Jun 30, 2020, 11:41 PM

(from the American Academy of Pediatricians) The American Academy of Pediatricians has updated interim guidance to reflect the growing understanding of the virus’ impact on children and adolescents. It strongly advocates for schools to reopen and stresses the fundamental role of schools in providing academic instruction, social and emotional skills, safety, nutrition, physical activity, and mental health therapy as well as schools' role in addressing racial and social inequity. How to effectively observe social distancing and wear cloth face coverings is addressed in the guidance, which examines factors such as students’ ages, developmental stages and special considerations. The guidance also questions the use of a 6-feet distancing rule when in many cases a 3-feet distance can safely bring significantly more students into the classroom as well as the practicality of temperature checks on a large scale.
