(from American School & University) With 15,000 photovoltaic-panel arrays on 19 acres of land, Hampshire College IS the first residential college in the U.S. to generate 100 percent of campus electricity from solar power (a California community college went all solar in 2011). The Massachusetts liberal arts college is buying the electricity at a fixed rate from SolarCity, according to college officials. The project is estimated to save the college about $400,000 a year in electricity costs for up to 20 years, for total estimated savings of $8 million. In addition, by eliminating 3,000 metric tons of greenhouse-gas emissions a year, its impact will be equivalent to taking almost 650 cars off the road.
Hampshire has 1,400 students and an annual operating budget of $56 million.
