(from EdSurge) Higher education institutions have another tool for engaging students in the application process. Better Make Room, an offshoot of former First Lady Michelle Obama's Reach Higher program aimed at widening access to college, connects schools with potential students on social media platforms including Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and, most recently, text messaging.

The texting tool is called Up Next, and it lets students (high school as well as current college enrollees) text basic questions about college applications, student aid and loan repayment. Participating schools engage in the convesation using using the hashtag #BetterMake Room, and the campaign also sends students encouraging nudges including some from Michelle Obama herself. "Meeting young students on their cell phones ... is our theory of change, to scale up [Obama's] message as possible," said Don Yu, director of Better Make Room.
