Anti-Bullying Measures Gather Steam

(various sources) Efforts in different states to combat student-on-student bullying are playing out in legislation that could hold schools — including private schools, in at least one state — accountable for working harder to prevent bullying and for reporting on incidents of bullying that do occur.

In California, a bill moving through the legislature requires schools to adopt procedures for preventing bullying, the state education department to post online a training module and schools to make the training available to teachers and staff. Already, state law requires schools to have policies that prohibit discrimination and bullying as part of their safety plans.

In Indiana, a push is underway to extend a 2013 law, which requires public and charter schools to report bullying to the state education department, to private schools as well.
