(from Inside Higher Education) Selective educational institutions need greater racial and ethnic diversity among admissions staff if they really wish to diversify their student bodies, according to a recent article by a Harvard Ph.D. student who studies race, inequality, culture and education. The author, Nadirah Farah Foley, cited a 2017 study that found nearly half of admissions staff at many competitive colleges were alumni of those very schools, making them more likely to admit students with similar backgrounds and qualifications. Another report found that among college admissions staff, women, black and Latino professionals become less represented as positions become more senior.
