(from Independent School Magazine) Classroom design has tended to lean towards greater flexibility in recent years, with the aim of encouraging creative, student-driven learning. Now architect Ben Pell asks, "Has the classroom itself become outmoded? ... In this new paradigm of flexibility, is the fixed nature of the room contrary to the openness of a dynamic learning environment?" Pell proposes thinking about school spaces along two axes: flexible versus fixed and open versus closed. While certain spaces tend to fall closer to one side than another, for example a traditional library tends toward being flexible and closed, rethinking that position could rethink student learning.
