Are Summer Programs Effective in Addressing COVID Learning Loss?

(From The74) Research examining thousands of students in eight cities suggests that summer programs incorporating both academics and enrichment get results. The University of Arizona studied Summer Boost programs, a philanthropic initiative launched in 2022 to address COVID learning loss. They found that within just four weeks, students made three to four weeks of reading progress and four to five weeks in math. Schools prioritized hiring veteran teachers and those who had worked with the students during the school year. Schools in the program are encouraged to use as much of their budget as possible to pay teachers.
