(From Inside Higher Ed) In his first days in office, President Joe Biden moved to dismantle a slew of Trump-era regulations, making visas easier for international students easier to come by. By executive order, Biden ended the so-called Muslim travel ban, which barred entry to the U.S. of citizens from some majority-Muslim countries and ordered the State Department to begin processing visas. He also ordered the Secretary of Homeland Security to preserve the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
(From ICEF Monitor) A survey of university respondents in 61 countries finds they are more are optimistic than pessimistic about international student recruitment in 2021. 51% said they were aiming to diversify their source markets, 38% weren’t sure or were in the consideration phase and only 11% were not interested in becoming active in a more diverse set of countries. The majority of respondents reported lower-than-expected student intakes in 2020, but a significant proportion said that their recruitment efforts yielded the same enrollments and some even reported better than expected results. Going forward into 2021, 29% of educators said they are thinking of offering tuition discounts to students who have to start their programs online, lower than the 44% who indicate they are not considering this incentive.
