Contrary to popular opinion, top executive talent isn't highly motivated by compensation, says business professor Roger L. Martin. What's more effective: Treat highly productive leaders as distinct individuals, and make an effort to meet their particular needs; they tend not to like being grouped in a class with others. Also provide them with ample opportunity to take on challenges that will extend their skills and abilities. Finally, be sure to commend top talent when they succeed in maximizing opportunities. They won't ask for praise, but it's what motivates them to keep growing and achieving.
