Big Donations Flow to Small Schools

Oct 2, 2017, 2:15 PM

(from Bloomberg Quint) Kenyon College ($75 million), Oglethorpe University ($50 million) and Dakota State University ($30 million) are among the small higher-ed institutions that have received significant donations in recent weeks and months, adding a new dimension to a category that usually includes names like Harvard, Stanford and Princeton. Some donors behind the gifts say they feel they can have a bigger impact at smaller schools. For instance, the $30 million gift to Dakota State came from an alumnus who wants the school to develop a cybersecurity program. "Something like this will just shoot them far into the future, and it will go much further than it would any place else," said Miles Beacon, a banking executive who made that gift.
