(From Liebert Cassidy Whitmore) The California legislature recently passed a bill that extends the state’s workplace and school discrimination protections to cover race-related traits. The change aims to prevent unequal treatment related to natural black hairstyles, including braids, locks and twists. The bill states that, "Workplace dress code and grooming policies that prohibit natural hair, including afros, braids, twists, and locks, have a disparate impact on Black individuals as these policies are more likely to deter Black applicants and burden or punish Black employees than any other group." The California law may give schools outside the state opportunity to consider their policies and protections.
