Private School Employee Exemption From Minimum Wage Hike

Mar 2, 2020, 11:55 AM

(From St. Louis Public Radio) Hourly wage workers at private and religious schools in Missouri could be exempted from statewide minimum wage increases under legislation approved in the Missouri House of Representatives last week. In November 2018, voters overwhelmingly approved a plan to increase the state’s minimum wage each year until it reaches $12 by 2023. Sponsors of the recent bill exempting private school workers say the exemption creates parity between public and private schools. Private schools estimated they would need to raise tuition 10% over the next five years to pay workers appropriately. The wage increase is "very burdensome for people that are already paying for public school taxes on their personal property and also for their children’s education in Christian schools,” said the lawmaker who proposed the exemption. It heads to the Missouri Senate for further consideration.
