Bloomberg Gives $1.8 Billion to Financial Aid

Nov 19, 2018, 2:17 PM

(from the New York Times) In the largest ever gift of its kind, billionaire Michael Bloomberg has announced plans to donate an additional $1.8 billion to Johns Hopkins University so that admissions at his alma mater will be "forever need-blind; finances will never again factor into decisions" about which students are admitted. In announcing the donation, Bloomberg identified three further steps, along with a greater commitment from federal and state governments, to help qualified students from low- and middle-income families attend and graduate from top colleges:

  • Improve college advising so that more students from more diverse backgrounds apply to select colleges.
  • Persuade more colleges to increase their financial aid and accept more low- and middle-income students.
  • Steer more graduates to direct their alumni giving to financial aid.

Prior to this announcement, Bloomberg had already given the Baltimore institution $1.5 billion to support research, teaching and financial aid.
