(from the Hartford Courant) A recent tragedy in Connecticut reveals the importance of independent schools doing all they can to prevent bullying, track and record it when it happens, and enforce consequences where appropriate. After a sophomore at Marianapolis Preparatory School, a boarding and day school, committed suicide in early December, his parents published an obituary stating he died "after struggling with bullying from peers."
The school hired a law firm, which in February released a 28-page report that detailed a review of incidents leading up to his death and ultimately lauded the school for its response. Among the attorneys' recommendations: Improve and formalize the tracking and reporting of incidents. Ultimately, the lawyers wrote, "our recommendatins are simply a reflection of the things that could be done even better."
