(from The Atlantic) Smoke from the latest round of devastating fires in California has forced school closures along with destroying thousands of structures, killing at least 75 people and leaving an estimated 700 others unaccounted for. While many regions of the country this time of year anticipate school closures due to snow and ice, schools hundreds of miles away from the "Camp Fire" that destroyed the town of Paradise are adjusting to what many hope is not a new reality of climate change.Tiny particulates in wildfire smoke can lead to serious health consequences, including cardiac arrest, stroke and other deadly outcomes. Besides resulting in dangerous outdoor air quality, the smoke has penetrated buildings, even triggering fire alarms inside some classrooms well over 100 miles away.
