(from the Chronicle of Higher Education) New information from the U.S. Department of Education confirms it: Reports of hate-motivated episodes on college and university campuses rose to 1,250 in the election year of 2016, up from an average of 970 per year, on average, in each of the four previous years. Forty percent of reported campus hate crimes were associated with racial bias, followed by those related to religious affiliation (19 percent) and incidents targeting individuals based on disability, gender, and sexual orientation and/or gender identity. Colleges reported hate crimes that involved vandalism and property destruction (38 percent of overall reports), criminal acts of intimidation (38 percent) and acts of physical assault (16 percent).
