(from Inside Higher Ed) Following Saturday's shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue that killed 11 people, chapters of the Jewish college student organization Hillel opened centers nationwide for counseling and discussions. Many campus Hillel chapters are planning vigils to honor the victims of Pittsburgh. In some college towns, Hillel centers are the most visible Jewish organization in the community, and for the past two years, the national organization has been doing workshops for campus leaders, including drills and simulations for how to respond if a center faces a threat. "The best thing right now is to have a strong community," said Hillel International's vice president of communications. He also urges campus leaders to listen to Jewish and non-Jewish students, and plan responses to their concerns.
