Colleges Battle Severe Flu Outbreaks

(From Inside Higher Ed) Colleges across the country are seeing large numbers of students and employees suffering from influenza this year. The University of Michigan is among the many college campuses experiencing early outbreaks of the flu, with nearly 530 students diagnosed since the beginning of October, prompting an investigation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Among those who've contracted flu at University of Michigan this fall, 77% didn't get a flu vaccine. Some flu experts are worried that low exposure to last year’s flu virus may have weakened people’s immune systems, which could result in a more extreme flu season.
