(From AARP) As demand for Covid testing outstrips supply in the U.S., advisors at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are keeping a close eye on test kit shortages and lab delays. In a recent newsletter announcement, the CDC advised diagnostic service providers to expect an increase in the demand for laboratory-based COVID-19 testing due to a shortage in supply for both point-of-care testing and rapid testing for COVID-19.
The shortage has had an immediate impact on schools, at a time when kids are headed back to the classroom. In Illinois, for instance, schools that were supposed to begin mandated COVID-19 testing of unvaccinated staff members have yet to implement the testing, citing delays in obtaining parental permissions for student testing and receiving adequate training for using the SHIELD testing.
