Cellphone Use in the Class?

(from NPR WXXI news) Professors have come up with a number of strategies to keep college students away from their phones during class – from using jamming technology (illegal in the U.S.) to public humiliation, personal reprimands, disabling wireless access, projecting the offending phone on a classroom screen and confiscation. Still others offer a less punitive approach by allowing students to have designated tech breaks. An interview with Larry D. Rosen, emeritus professor of psychology at California State University-Dominguez Hills, lends credence to this notion of time-limited access – starting out with a break every 15 minutes, then increasing the intervals between breaks.
