Charitable giving to U.S. colleges and universities reached $41 billion in the fiscal year ending in June 2016, according to the Council for Aid to Education. That's an increase of just 1.7 percent above the 2015 total of $40.3 billion and a sharp decline from the 2014-2015 growth rate of 7.6 percent. While corporations, foundations and other organizations increased their charitable giving last year, individuals did not, likely due to the struggling stock market. Alumni giving dropped 8.5 percent last year, and giving by other individuals declined 6 percent.
Foundations are the largest source of charitable support for higher education, accounting for 30.4 percent of total giving in 2016. Alumni account for 24.2 percent of giving.
