The release last week of a 50-page report documenting decades of sexual abuse at a Connecticut boarding school underscores a profound shift in how independent schools are handling such allegations. Whereas incidents in the past were often "handled internally and quietly" in efforts aimed at protecting the institution, Choate Rosemary Hall is one of a growing number of schools that have invited students and alumni to report allegations of sexual abuse, and are communicating findings broadly. Schools are also strengthening their policies to prevent abuse, including tighter employee screening and training, and to help former and current students who have been affected.
