College Counseling Crisis?

Jul 9, 2019, 1:22 AM

(from Inside Higher Ed) Recent college admissions scandals have revealed the extremities to which some parents of independent school students will go to secure college placement for their children. The long-term effects of these pressures may push college counselors into other careers. Jim Jump, an academic dean and director of college counseling at St. Christopher's School in Richmond, Virginia, reported that, "This spring a handful of friends who represent the very best of our profession have talked about getting out. The college counseling landscape may be facing its own version of global warming as the myth of prestige meets a new generation of parents and produces more frequent and violent storms." He urges a renewal of the college admission process that is built around student health and well-being.
