College Pays Out Data Breach Suit

Oct 17, 2024, 9:04 AM

(From Inside Higher Ed) Lansing Community College in Michigan will pay $1.45 million to settle claims from a data breach affecting over 750,000 students, employees and applicants. The breach, which occurred between December 2022 and March 2023, led to a lawsuit where victims may claim up to $2,000. Although the college denied significant harm and said no data was exfiltrated, they are discontinuing the vulnerable application platform, increasing verification steps and reducing the number of authorized administrators. A similar breach at Hope College settled for $1.5 million earlier this year.
