Colleges Mitigate Risk Post "Varsity Blues"

Apr 10, 2019, 12:34 PM

(from the National Association of College and University Business Officers) In the wake of the “Varsity Blues” scandal, in which federal prosecutors charged at least 50 people in an elaborate scheme to gain admission for their children at elite universities, the National Association for College and University Business Officers has outlined five steps colleges can take to mitigate their risk:

  1. Implement Policies: Institutions without a formal policy governing the admissions process should develop one as soon as possible.
  2. Identify and Train PersonnelThe college or university should conduct vetting of personnel involved in the admissions process.
  3. Conduct Audits and Implement Controls: Internal controls and compliance programs should be regularly evaluated at colleges and universities.
  4. Channel ComplaintsEstablish an anonymous hotline to facilitate reports of illegal, unethical, or noncompliant activities.
  5. Initiate an Internal InvestigationEven institutions that believe they are in the clear should consider whether to initiate an internal investigation to evaluate and advise their governing boards about potential risks.
