(from VOX) Colleges and universities are bracing for an "enrollment cliff" in four years, when traditional college-age students are far fewer in the general population, as a result of fewer births during the Great Recession of 2008. Demographics may never be favorable to colleges again, as the birth rate shrinks. Geography is also concerning to colleges in the Northeast and Midwest, as more families move to the South and Southwest. Rather than focusing on building up campuses, college presidents will be focused on "deconstructing" campuses and rightsizing facilities to meet new needs, some say.
