In a Senate subcommittee hearing on Tuesday, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos would not affirm that the Department of Education will challenge discrimination against LGBTQ students. DeVos answered questions about the Trump administration's proposed budget, which decreases funding for after-school programs and teacher training and increases funding for private-school vouchers. Some worry that the religious schools made available to more students with increased vouchers discriminate against LGBTQ students. DeVos stated that all schools receiving federal funding should follow the law but also said that federal law does not have clear protections for LGBTQ students. Courts and Congress, not the Department, would clarify protections, she explained. Senators say that the education portion of the Trump budget is not likely to pass without significant changes.
