(From Chronicle of Higher Education) The act of applying to college is changing, as more institutions deploy alternative admissions approaches which remove conventional applications from the equation. Over the last year, dozens more colleges have deployed a direct admissions approach, a process where colleges make offers of admission — often with financial aid — to students without requiring them to go through a lengthy admissions process first. So far, the evidence suggests that short-circuiting the traditional application process can have a powerful effect on some prospective students, particularly Black, Latino, and first-generation students, says Jenny Rickard, president and chief executive of the Common App.
