Disposable Plastics Disappear from Dining

(from CR80 News) Plastic straws, beverage cups and utensils are starting to vanish from campus dining halls, part of a wider campaign that has already made styrofoam and bleached paper products rare in many areas. Duke University is among the latest schools to eliminate nonbiodegradable disposables. On July 1, the North Carolina University pledged to eliminate all forms of disposable plastic in all 34 of its campus dining locations. The venues will now use paper bags, utensils and straws, along with beverage containers made from a biodegradable plant-based substance.

"There are compostable and recyclable alternatives for these products out there, and the price point has come down significantly since when they were introduced," said Marcus Carson, assistant director of Duke Dining for Sustainability and Quality Control.
