Sixty-one percent of nonprofit organizations experienced an increase in charitable giving in 2016, down from 65 percent in 2015 and the lowest percentage overall since 2010, according to the Nonprofit Research Collaborative's Winter 2017 Nonprofit Fundraising study. More than a third of respondents attributed at least part of the drop to the 2016 presidential campaign, which may have diverted donation dollars and created uncertainty about economic and political matters. Statistics overall were consistent across U.S. regions and also between the U.S. and Canada. Among organizations doing well, donor targeting emerged as one key to success.
