Economic Challenges for Parents Persist

(From The New York Times) Though millions of U.S. workers have now returned to the office, there is still one large group of Americans whose employment rates remain far below their pre-pandemic levels — mothers of young children. That's according to new data from Moody's Analytics, which shows the labor force participation rate among women impacted by childcare needs fell further than that of their male counterparts remains depressed by 2.8 points. What is more concerning is that it has trended in the wrong direction after the initial recovery through June. This situation is unlikely to change over the final month or two of the current school year. But it raises a major question about the start of the next school year: Will schools fully reopen in time to get parents back to work?
