(From Campus Safety) A new U.S. Department of Education directive requires schools to give parents access to all educational records, including those on gender identity. A Dear Colleague letter says many schools misinterpret federal privacy laws, preventing parents from knowing if their child uses a different name or pronoun. Citing FERPA and PPRA, the directive mandates compliance or risks federal funding loss. LGBTQ+ advocates warn it endangers students with unsupportive parents, calling it cruel and discriminatory, and noting most schools already involve parents when safe.
