Independent schools have been cautiously optimistic about Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos' support for private school choice programs, but charter school supporters are pushing back. In his fiscal 2018 budget proposal, President Trump proposed cutting more than $9 billion from federal education programs while pouring an additional $1.4 billion into school choice programs, including $250 million for a private school choice plan. Despite a $168 million boost for charter schools, their supporters condemn the budget because they believe it emphasizes private school choice and severs many programs that help disadvantaged students.
