(from Inside Higher Ed) Economist Nathan D. Grawe has published a new book, "The Agile College," which charts not only demographic trends but strategies colleges use to maintain and grow enrollments at sustainable levels. Schools will likely face declining demographics for a period following the pandemic. "Drawing on patterns of fertility from the 1918 pandemic, Phillip Levine and Melissa Kearney estimate that we may see 300,000 to 500,000 fewer babies born in 2020 than in 2019," said Grawe. "That would be a decline of almost 10% in just one year." Grawe highlights the importance of retention initiatives, openness to new ways of working as well as accountability to results and empirical evaluations of new strategies' effectiveness.
