When news of the October 7 massacre broke, some in the Dunn School community called for a statement from Head of School Kalyan Balaven. Upon reflection, Balaven determined the boarding-day school should go beyond a statement, and do what it did best, develop education around the conflict and create space for dialogue. By devoting resources proactively to community conversation, the school avoided spending reactively on crisis and reputational management. Most importantly, students, faculty and staff had the tools to engage with each other over the course of a difficult year.
