Explaining issues from how financial aid works to the complete costs of educating students, a new website from the Urban Institute addresses college debt concerns by helping families understand a broad range of factors that can impact affordability. In guidance that could also be helpful to independent schools, the site explains that the tuition many students pay, "whether out of pocket or with financial aid, often covers only a fraction of what their education really costs," including expenditures for instruction, services and support, and operations and maintenance. Developed with financial support from Lumina Foundation, Understanding College Affordability also explores additional expenses beyond tuition, such as food, housing, books and supplies.
