(from the Washington Post) Schools across the country are dealing with staffing shortages never before experienced by long-term administrators. Parents are servings as substitutes, teachers are doing custodial work and some classes are not being held. Many districts have received more money this year, which some schools are using for hiring bonuses and salary increases, but others are not due to expenditures on COVID mitigation measures, such as ventilation improvements, virtual learning and mental health resources, and because they do not want to implement changes they cannot sustain going forward. It's not only pay but recent attacks by parents which make workers reluctant to work in schools. Some schools are contracting with education majors while they're finishing up college. Others are eliminating part-time positions so that fewer workers get more benefits.
