(From Education Week) Use of facial recognition is gaining traction at airports, motor vehicle departments, stores and stadiums. It's just beginning to make inroads at public schools, but its use is contentious and has many critics. One New York State public school has a $1.4 million system that is designed to enable security officers to quickly respond to the appearance of expelled students, disgruntled employees, sex offenders or certain weapons the system is programmed to detect. Only students seen as threats will be loaded into the database. The New York Civil Liberties Union said facial recognition has no place in schools.
